Video Download Instructions

Here's what you really do need to know

To download a video file from this website, follow these steps:

  1. On the Videos page, click on the "Download" option for the video you'd like to download to your computer.
  2. A dialog box will pop up, asking whether you want to open the file, or save it to disk.  Choose "Save to disk".
  3. After the file downloads, change the extension of the file name from .doc to .flv   You can do this by renaming the file.  You'll likely see a warning asking if you're sure you want to change the extension.   Proceed with the change.
Keep in mind that, to view the video, you must have software on your computer that can play Flash videos.  (If you have software that can convert the Flash file to another format (e.g. avi, .mov, .m4v, .wmv) that your computer will play, that's another option.)  Having a web browser that can play embedded Flash videos isn't enough--browsers can't play Flash files directly.  If you need a Flash player that can play such files directly, a free one for Windows users is FLV Player, which you can find at www.download.com   Mac users can play Flash videos from QuickTime Player after installing the free Perian plug-in.

Here's what you reallly don't need to know

The Internet browser add-ons or services like Video Downloader or Keepvid that are commonly used to download videos posted on YouTube and elsewhere won't work for videos on this website.  That's not a big deal.

An easy alternative would be to simply give you the Internet address of the Flash video file you'd like to download so that your web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, etc.) could download it.  However, that alternative doesn't exist, because browsers won't download video files directly.  They'll let you download and save .pdf, .doc, .xls and other kinds of files, but not a Flash (.flv) file.

Fortunately, there's a way around this.  Since we know a file with a .doc extension can be downloaded without problems, I simply changed the .flv extension of the video file to .doc.  All you have to do is change the extension from .doc to .flv after you've downloaded the file.  It's silly to have to do it this way, but it's easy and it works.
