Quickie #1:  The Wall Street Journal published an interesting article about Meb Keflezighi. Meb, you may recall, won this year's Boston Marathon, and is now going for a win at Sunday's New York City Marathon. The article has some interesting tidbits about his training methods. "Running Away With It: How American Meb Keflezighi Is Shaking Up the Marathon World"

Quickie #2:  Ultramax Sports is expanding its offerings to include its first-ever bicycle race.  The Rocheport Roubaix is scheduled for Sunday, February 15th--one week before the long-established Froze Toes road race put on by the Columbia Bike Club.  The race website says the race is on gravel, so at least some of the course will be on the Katy Trail.

Ultramax also announced another new event, the Mid-America Multisport National Championship, will be held at Innsbrook on September 12th.  The race will also serve as USA Triathlon's National Club Championship.

It looks like this new race will replace Halfmax, which was resurrected by Ultramax this year and held in conjunction with Quartermax and Octomax in June.  Despite lots of promotion, Halfmax only had 115 participants--certainly far fewer than what they had hoped, and nowhere near the 400+ participants the race once attracted.  Halfmax was first held in 2003, but Ultramax may have finally pulled the plug on it.

WEEKEND EVENTS FOR NOVEMBER 1-2

Anyone racing on Sunday is reminded that Daylight Savings Time ends at 2:00 a.m. that morning.

The last, big race weekend of the year is here for Lake-area runners.  More runners will be racing this weekend than on any other weekend through the end of the year.  For many, this weekend marks the end of the race season.

Two of the best and most popular races are on tap this weekend.

In the Lake area, the Give 'Em The Bird 5K Run, 1-Mile Walk and Kids Fun Run is on Saturday in Versailles.  Race-day registration opens at  7:00 a.m. at Versailles Total Fitness.  The 5K and 1-mile walk start at 9:00 a.m.  This event is truly the Super Bowl of 5Ks, with a live radio broadcast, a live rendition of the national anthem, a musical group and the Versailles High School cheerleaders along the course route, professional chip timing, and a really cute kids race. More details can be found further down this column under "Upcoming Events".

Whether you are attending the race or not, be sure to tune your radio to race co-sponsor KS95.1-FM on Saturday morning to hear program director J.T. Gerlt broadcast live from the starting line. (It's a rare treat to be able to hear a live radio broadcast from a 5K while you're on your way to participate in it.)

On Sunday is the most popular out-of-town race for Lake-area runners--the Bass Pro Outdoor Fitness Festival's marathon, marathon relay, half marathon and 5K.  We have thirty-four runners (so far) making the trip to Springfield.  Good luck to everyone running.

We also want to wish the best of luck on Saturday to the high school cross country runners from Eldon, Osage and Versailles who will be competing in the Class 3 district championships in Moberly, and Camdenton High School's Faith Scheidemantle, who will be competing in the Class 4 sectionals in Nixa.

Finally, we want to wish good luck and safe travels to Terry Atteberry and Angela Martin, who will be competing (along with 50,000-plus other runners) in the New York City Marathon, and Todd Raney, who will be running the BG26.2 Marathon in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on Sunday.

Elsewhere:

Springfield and southwest Missouri:

Bass Pro Marathon, Marathon Relay, Half Marathon & 5K, Sunday
Other running events

St. Louis:

St. Louis Half Marathon & 5K, Sunday
Other running events

Kansas City area:

Kansas Half Marathon & 5K, Sunday
Other running events

Most of the Lake Area Runners will be racing this weekend, so don't expect any local runs by the group.

ROCK ISLAND TRAIL (updated October 29th)

An advisory committee for the City of Eldon held a public meeting Monday night (October 27th) to introduce the proposed Rock Island Trail project to a group of 50-60 interested citizens, property owners and others in attendance.

A few months ago, this proposed hiking/biking trail on the unused Rock Island railroad line that passes through Eldon and Versailles, and extends across most of Missouri, looked like it might never happen. Ameren Missouri, which owns the railroad line through a subsidiary, was considering selling it, essentially guaranteeing that a recreational trail would never be built on it. Instead, Ameren decided to abandon the line and turn it over to the Missouri State Parks for construction of a trail. Ameren's plan requires approval by the federal government and, if approved, Ameren will then have to remove the track and ties before trail construction can begin. If all goes according to plan, trail construction could begin in about two or three years.

The rail line is 145 miles long. Building a trail of that length could take 10 years or more, depending on funding. It's likely to be completed in segments, with the most difficult and expensive segments built last.

After following developments with the proposed trail these past two years, the biggest surprise from Monday's meeting is that it looks like this trail will indeed be built. The small communities like Eldon, Versailles and many others that grew up mostly because of the Rock Island rail line--and which then suffered as rail service was discontinued--are now looking to the conversion of the abandoned rail line to recreational use as a stimulus for economic development. They are pushing the project heavily, and the state representatives for the districts in which these cities are located are helping it along. (A number of state representatives, as well as a member of Sen. Claire McCaskill's staff, were at Monday night's meeting.) There's a lot of momentum for the project, politicially speaking.

There's still a long way to go and lots of hurdles to overcome, but I think there's a very good chance that in the next five years we'll see a segment of the Rock Island Trail completed near the Lake area. The best bet would be the 18-mile stretch between Eldon and Versailles.

This really is great news.

Here's the Lake Sun's take on the meeting.

NIGHT GLOW COSTUME CRAWL FUN RUN/WALK (updated October 26th)

The weather gods blessed the first annual Night Glow Costume Crawl fun run/walk with phenomenal weather on Saturday night (October 25th).  It helped to bring out about thirty runners and walkers, plus some costumed characters, to Bob Shore Stadium for a benefit for Camdenton High School's Pride of the Lake Marching Band.  Everyone had a great time.

Click on photo for a larger image.

The top male and female finishers of the two-mile race around the high school track were Nigher Alfaro and Isabella Vitelli.

I-35 CHALLENGE (updated October 25th)

The I-35 Challenge is a partnership between the Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon and the Des Moines Marathon, that offers 50 marathon and 150 half marathon runners the opportunity to participate in both races and earn a special medal and finisher's t-shirt for finishing.

Results have been posted for the two-race finish times for participants in the challenge.  Ashley Pryor had the fastest combined finish time among the 25 women who completed the marathon challenge, with a combined 8:03:55.  Todd Raney had a combined marathon time of 8:07:11, which was ninth among the 21 men who finished.

The full results can be found here. (Please note that the title incorrectly says "Half Marathon".)

GIVE 'EM THE BIRD 5K RUN, 1-MILE WALK & KIDS FUN RUN (posted May 27th)

Versailles Total Fitness' fourth annual Give 'Em The Bird 5K run, 1-mile walk and kids' quarter-mile fun run will be held on Saturday, November 1st.  It starts at 9:00 a.m. at Versailles Total Fitness at 131 N. Monroe (course map).  As in previous years, proceeds from the event will help local families in need during the holiday season; last year's event raised $6,000 for Food for Morgan County.

Give 'Em The Bird has the biggest "wow" factor of any 5K in the Lake area.  Last year's race, for instance, included a live radio broadcast and music by race co-sponsor KS95.1 at the start/finish line, a live singing of the national anthem, a live musical group performing in front of the Morgan County courthouse, the Versailles High School cheerleaders cheering along the course, and plenty of course support from the police, firefighters, and volunteers.  To top it off, the kids fun run was the cutest race we watched all year.  Still not convinced you want to go?  Watch this.

Registration is now open online, or you can download a registration form to mail to or drop off at Versailles Total Fitness.   The entry fee is $25 if you register on or before October 31st, or $35 on race day.  T-shirts can only be guaranteed to those who register by October 15th

There's no entry fee, but also no t-shirt, for participants in the kids fun run.  Participants will, however, receive finishers ribbons.

FREEZIN' 5K FUN RUN/WALK & CHILLIN' FOR CHILI COOK-OFF (updated October 10th)

The fifth annual run/walk in memory of Camdenton police officer Floyd Sanders and two others--Mike Marshall and Iris Carnahan--in our community who succumbed to pancreatic cancer will be held on Saturday, November 8th at the Linn Creek City Park (map).   This year's event will also include a chili cook-off shortly after the 5K.  Proceeds from both events will go to the Lustgarten Foundation to support research for a cure for pancreatic cancer.  Everyone is encouraged to wear purple on the day of the event.

The Freezin' 5K will begin at 10:00 a.m., with race-day registration beginning at 9:00 a.m.   The entry fee is $25 for individuals, or $50 for families up to four.  To guarantee your t-shirt on race day, you must register by October 24th.  Click here to download a registration form.

The Chillin' for Chili Cook-Off begins with registration at 11:30 a.m., followed by serving at noon, judging at 12:30, and awards at 1:30. The entry fee is $50 for teams up to four people. For full details and to download a registration form, click here.

LAKER 5K TURKEY TROT (posted October 20th)

The Laker 5K Turkey Trot--the Lake area's only Thanksgiving Day run--returns for a fifth year on November 27th.  The race starts at 9:00 a.m. at Camdenton High School.  Race-day registration opens at 7:30 a.m.

The entry fee is $20 for individuals, or $15 per person for families of three or more, for those registering on or before November 18th.  Only those who pre-register will be guaranteed a t-shirt on race day.

After November 18th, the entry fee rises to $25 for individuals and $20 per person for families of three or more.

All proceeds from the event go to Lake area food pantries.  In addition, runners are also encouraged to bring canned or boxed food items for the pantries.

Click for a flyer/registration form in .docx or .pdf format.

Be sure to stick around after the race to watch the pie-eating contest (limited to 15 participants).  Pete Leyva set a record of 7.9 seconds while winning last year's competition.
